Ethical and Privacy Assessments of IMPETUS

This section includes the analysis of the IMPETUS tools and platform from the perspective of European data protection laws and ethical guidelines. It also provides “General considerations and recommendations” which refer to issues that have not been dealt with during the testing of the tools within the IMPETUS Project, but should be considered in the event of an adoption of the tools and of the platform in real contexts, especially for public entities. From an IMPETUS perspective, the analysis provided a deep understanding and objective consideration of different regulations and standards in terms of data usage. From a general perspective, the detailed analysis aims at presenting concrete examples so that interested users can follow the same methodoloy when carring out a similar assessment of other technologies they might wish to adopt.

For the ethical analysis, we consider relevant EU guidelines and regulations. A useful tool to assess compliance could also be the Privacy, Ethical and Social Impact Assessment (PESIA) questionnaire. The questionnaire focuses on IoT systems but can be adapted also to other technological solutions. The PESIA model has been developed by Politecnico di Torino as part of the VIRT-EU project in collaboration with scholars from the Open Rights Group, London School of Economics and the IT University of Copenhagen.

On the other hand, for theData Protection Impact Assessment” (DPIA), we refer to the assessment conducted following the ENISA methodology for the tools dealing with personal data and the main platform.

The section includes the following:

  1. Privacy impact assessments and ethical analysis

  2. Experiences and lessons learnt - Ethical and privacy enforcement for future development
